Truyền Ký - a small Hakka eatery in a tiny alley

I heard about this place long time ago but never had a chance to visit this famous small Chinese eatery in a typical tiny alley in Saigon. Truyền Ký, it's the name of this Chinese House. It seems we have several Truyền Ký in Saigon, but which one is the original, tough to say.
Judging by the number of guests having lunch today, the variety of dishes in the menu, I would say it could be one of the best. After the first visit, three weeks later I was back here with my other friends for dinner. Talking to the staff, I learnt that the business started back to 1950s, now managed by the third generation. The dish they serve is from the Hakka cuisine.

We may never expect to find such a good eatery located in a tiny quiet residential alley...

Mostly guests are either local Chinese or visitors from Hong Khong, China, few Westerners always  accompanied with the locals, we are probably only Vietnamese in this place today. We went there quite late for lunch, nearly 2:00 PM, but most tables were still occupied, the ground floor is so narrow, enough only 2 or 3 small tables for few customers and the kitchen, so the waiter quickly took us upstairs. I guess most people here are so familiar with the menu, so they order without asking it, except us. There is no price in the menu but the price would be good, as at the end we paid about 20 USD for 4 dishes course for 3.

Our four course meal at Truyen Ky House, all of them are just plain delicious...

The first dish - fried tofu topped with pork meat, deep fried chilli pepper and bitter melon stuffed with some mixture of pork, fish paste served with sour sweet sauce. Very good, it's quite different from what I imagine about the tofu filled with pork, instead the filling inside, here they put on the top as you see the photo below (Sorry most of my photos today are "dizzy" as I had a bit trouble to adjust my new camera with the old lens!)

Fried tofu covered with filling on top...

The second dish is the grilled pork meat stewed with taro, this could be one of their signature dishes as we all noticed that most tables ordered it. Very tasty, the good thing that taro is soft, smooth enough but richly tasty, it means the dish is perfectly stewed.

The grilled pork stewed with taro - a signature dish at Truyền Ký.

I heard that they also have other best dishes such as the succulent chicken steamed with salt, the
three-colours omelette, deep fried intestine…all of that could be my order next time (note: as I came back to this place later, so I did order exactly those famous dishes…)

Our third dish - beef stirred with sate, a bit spicy, hot, rich sate taste...

In my second visit we ordered steamed chicken, we found it good but not that excellent as people say.

Deep fried intestine is quite good, very crispy from the outside...

and the dipping is just a sugar thick sauce, but it goes well with the dish.

The 3-colour omelette is actually a mixture of salted, 100-year old eggs with pork meat.

It's difficult, eating in a Chinese place, without order the soup. The Chinese soup is something symbolic in Chinese cuisine. I'm sure, if anyone who is a big fan of Hongkong, Chinese TV series is very familiar with the expression "Drink soup for health". The way they cook all ingredients in soup for hours, so the best is the soup liquid, not meat or veggies.

Our fourth dish is simple soup with corn, carrot, Chinese date...

another soup in my second visit - the black see grass with pork.

The food was richly tasty, the service was quick, everything was clean, the time when we've been here quite late for lunch so not very crowded and less familiar noise as in any Chinese eatery, the only thing that I may suggest - it would be better if they could serve the rice in some chinaware with lid rather than in a kind of washing stainless bowl.

If you want to discover , it would be a bit challenging to locate the place, it's down in a small alley, just off Ly Thuong Kiet street, across the big supermarket Coopmart (or exactly Trung Nguyen coffee shop) , or here the address and phone number you may call to ask for the exact direction, or google map - as most people do these days!
